Opposing LNG in Fields Point

Written version of testimony as reported by Steve Ahlquist in RI Future Environmental racism and the Fields Point LNG Plant

Submitted to Docket(s):         PF15-28-000
Lead Applicant: National Grid LNG, LLC

In Laudato Si’ Pope Francis wrote: “The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.”

EPA recently created an Environmental Justice web site.  Look up data about the Fields Point area in Providence.  You’ll find that building a gas liquefaction plant in this area is an act of environmental racism in spreading filth. (See pages 10-11 and 13-14)

We know that “both shale gas and conventional natural gas have a larger GHG [greenhouse gas footprint] than do coal or oil, for any possible use of natural gas.” (See A bridge to nowhere: methane emissions and the greenhouse gas footprint of natural gas by Robert W.Howarth)

As of yesterday, humanity has to reduce global greenhouse gas emission by 7% per year; expanding the fracked-gas infrastructure is a crime of global magnitude. ( See Assessing “Dangerous Climate Change”: Required Reduction of Carbon Emissions to Protect Young People, Future Generations and Nature by James Hansen et al.)

The National Grid plan is a violation of the Article 1, Section 17 of the RI Constitution, the duty: “to provide for the conservation of the air, land, water, plant, animal, mineral and other natural resources of the state, and to adopt all means necessary and proper by law to protect the natural environment of the people of the state.” (See Rhode Island Constituion )

To you who are silently doing your jobs for this project I have but one thing to say: “You are complicit in crimes against humanity and against Mother Earth.”
